“Total Synthesis of Natural Products
by Exploitation of Dearomatization”
Natural products, also known as secondary metabolites, have been the most productive source for new drug development and have provided a thought-provoking inspiration for the developments of new synthetic strategies and methodologies, which tremendously advance the synthetic organic chemistry. In this lecture, he will outline the research activities focused recently on natural products in his laboratory since 2011 at HKUST and continue on the development of new synthetic strategies for total synthesis of natural products by exploring Phenol Oxidative Dearomatization (FOD) and Furan Oxidative Dearomatization (FOD, also known as Achmatowicz Rearrangement). Detailed discussions on the synthetic challenges and solutions in the course of these synthetic ventures will be presented in a story-telling fashion.
